International Student Writing Assistance

This program is temporarily full as of Jan. 25, 2010

During the Spring Semester of 2010, Mr. Roger Ford would be glad to tutor three to five international graduate students in writing English as they go about their writing for courses or research.  Mr. Ford has worked with international students during the past three semesters.  He wants to coach students as they work to develop a clear, professional style of writing.  Students will be responsible for working with their academic advisors so that their research is well done and clearly noted.  Mr. Ford will gladly work with early as well as later drafts of papers.  The goal is to teach effective composition and revision.  Mr. Ford does not want simply to be asked to give a paper one last editorial reading a couple of days before it is due.  Rather, he needs to have any paper for about three days, and students should expect to do significant revisions on at least some of the papers.  Then, Mr. Ford will be glad to review the revised paper to make suggestions, if needed

The books Mr. Ford uses and that students should have available are:

POCKET KEYS FOR WRITERS, the handbook for ESL 116G

ACADEMIC WRITING FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS, the text of samples for ESL 116G

A pocket dictionary and a pocket thesaurus, if possible, if you want copies for your back pack.  Otherwise please use The Free Dictionary http://thefreedictionary.com  It is a very useful site.

Finally, consult The Purdue Online Writing Lab for advice and samples.  Mr. Ford will probably direct you to material from that site.  Its address is http://owl.english.purdue.edu/

If you want to work with Mr. Ford or just have a question for him, please contact him at fordtutor@gmail.com  Students who plant to work with Mr. Ford should send him their name, e-mail address, major, research focus or subject (if any), and their academic advisor's name, e-mail address, and telephone number.

Best wishes!
