IMPS
Niagara Falls
Weekend Tour
Oct.
15-17, 2010
The IMPS weekend trip to
Niagara Falls
on Oct. 15-17 is a great opportunity to not only see the world-famous Niagara
Falls, but also to stay with an American host in their home and experience the
worship service at their church with them. (It also is a great time to travel as
the leaves on all the trees will be changing colors at this time.) We will be
staying with hosts from churches in
Lockport
,
NY
. The entire day on Saturday will involve sightseeing at the
Niagara Falls
area. After the church service on Sunday we will have a lunch together with all
the hosts before returning to
Penn
State
that afternoon. This trip is limited to 30 people, so register early! (Note
that we will leave from
State College
at
2 pm
on Friday, Oct. 3.)
SCHEDULE
Friday
1:30 PM- Assemble at the lobby of the
Pasquerilla Spiritual Center (across Curtin Road from Pattee Library and the
main CATA bus stop),
and leave promptly by 1:45 PM
5:30 PM- Stop in Salamanca, NY area for restroom, dinner and gas en route
7:00 PM- Arrive at First Baptist Church, Lockport, NY; meet Host Family; spend
the evening with them
Saturday
8:30 AM-
Meet at Church & drive to the Niagara Falls
9:00 AM- Arrive at Niagara Falls; Bill will guide in exploring the American side
of Falls ( Power Vista, Whirlpool State Park, Goat Island, Three Sisters
Islands, and Rainbow Mall)
(1:30 PM- Those having Canadian visas or not needing them can walk across the
bridge and enter Canada and explore the Canadian side of the Falls and the town
of Niagara Falls, Ontario; those staying on the American side- most of our group
- will have free time to choose among the options listed below.)
8:30 PM- After viewing the light show, return to Lockport and Host Family at
9:30 PM
Sunday Morning- Attend church activities with Host Family
12 Noon- Lunch at Church with all Host Families
1:30 PM- Leave from Church and return to State College; arrive home by 7:00 PM
===============================================================
Meals:
Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, and lunch on Sunday are provided by the Host
Family; students must bring or buy food for Saturday lunch and supper while
sight-seeing.
Cost: $45 = your share of car rental cost, van maintenance, insurance, gasoline,
parking, and administrative costs
*Optional activities on the American side will include: (approximate costs)
Maid-of-the-Mist Boat ride- $12.50 for adults
Cave of the Winds Trip- $12 for adults
Aquarium of Niagara Falls- $8
Niagara
Festival Theatre-
$2.50
*While
sight-seeing, you should always stay with at least one member of our group.
*You will not need any sleeping
bags, pillows or towels. Your host family will provide your bedding and towels
like in a hotel. Please bring your other bathroom supplies like soap, shampoo,
toothbrush etc.
*Bring a rain coat or umbrella,
and warm clothing, since the mist coming from the Falls can be heavy and cold.
(Climate is similar to
State College
.)
*Common courtesy in the
USA
includes sending a short "thank you" letter or email to your host
family after you return to
State College
.
*We will do all of our sightseeing on the
American side of the Falls, so you don't need a Canadian visa. Most
international students need visas to enter
Canada
, and since it costs over $75 to get a Canadian visa for the few hours you could
be in
Canada
by walking across the bridge, most of our group will be staying on the American
side of the Falls. (If you choose to apply for a Canadian visa, you may obtain
the application form at the Penn State Office of International Students and
Scholars. Note: The application process typically takes at least 2 weeks.)
To register, print off, complete and sign the
registration form below, and return it with your payment of $45 (cash or check
payable to "Bill Saxton") to me at 210A Eisenhower Chapel. You can
call before you come to be certain that I am there. Even if I am not there when
you come, you can place your payment in an envelope, write your name and phone
number and email address on the envelope, and slide it under my office door. I
will then email you to confirm that I received it and that you are registered
for the trip!
An important note about this trip:
It is
necessary that you speak some English in order to communicate with your host
family. Visiting parents or other relatives who do not speak English may join
this trip if they are accompanied by their Penn State-affiliated family member
who does speak English. Also, if they do not have
Penn
State
University
medical insurance, you should purchase insurance for them. For insurance, you
can check the following website http://www.insurancepa.com
or contact them by email: mark@insurancepa.com or phone: 1-888-671-2639.
